A court has heard disturbing allegations against a man in his forties who is accused of assaulting his ex-partner in her home. The charges brought against him include two counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, threats to kill, non-fatal strangulation, trespassing with intent to commit rape, and various assaults causing actual bodily harm. To protect the victim’s privacy, the man’s identity is being withheld.
According to the proceedings held at Lisburn Magistrates Court, the man had previously appeared at the woman’s residence on two occasions. On one of these visits, he was reportedly armed with a baseball bat, but this incident was treated as a domestic matter by authorities and did not lead to charges. A detective constable described how, on August 14, hospital staff at Ulster Hospital contacted the police after the woman arrived with serious injuries and revealed that her ex-partner was also present at the hospital.
The court was told that the woman had been asleep when the man broke into her home while armed with a taser. He allegedly attacked her with the weapon, threatened her life, covered her mouth, and raped her twice. At one point during the ordeal, he agreed to take her to the hospital but stopped on a road to discard the taser, which police later recovered. Injuries sustained by the woman included a broken nose and bruising to her face and neck. The accused was arrested at the hospital and gave a prepared statement admitting to entering the house without permission but denied the charges, maintaining the encounters were consensual, though he had no explanation for the victim’s injuries.
The prosecution opposed bail, highlighting the significant escalation in the man’s behavior, noting his use of a taser and the violent sexual assaults. The detective explained that previous reports involving the man entering the woman’s home with a baseball bat only resulted in him being spoken to by police without charges, which did not deter him. When the judge questioned the lack of formal action following these earlier incidents, the detective confirmed no charges were filed as the cases were categorized as domestic matters. The defense argued the accused posed little risk as there was no prior record of violence or domestic abuse. However, the judge refused bail due to the severity of the latest offenses, the repeated unauthorized entries, and substantial injuries inflicted.
