Fans of Bonnie Tyler have gathered along the streets to honor the late singer as her coffin was brought back to her home in Mumbles, Swansea. The renowned artist, widely known for her hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away unexpectedly on 8 July at a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75. News of her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from many prominent figures, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart.
Though Bonnie Tyler’s career took her across the globe, residents of the Welsh coastal town remember her as a true “Swansea girl through and through,” someone who remained deeply connected to her roots. On Saturday afternoon, locals and fans were encouraged to line the roads in Newton and Mumbles to pay homage, with some gathering early outside her residence. Angela Powell, one of the first to arrive, described Tyler as “lovely – just like a friend you’d known all of your life.” Powell recounted personal connections to the singer’s family and fond memories of meeting her on several occasions.
Tributes continued to be heartfelt as people spoke about their memories of Tyler. Maggie Phillips from Gorseinon shared how she used to encounter the singer often in local shops and found her always gracious. Alongside her was Andrea Witts from Bryncoch, both of whom grew up listening to Tyler’s music and wished to celebrate her legacy. The memorial service is scheduled for Monday at St Mary’s Church in Swansea, followed by a procession through her hometown in Neath Port Talbot and a private family gathering.
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, rose from humble beginnings in a council house in Neath to international fame. Discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in Swansea, she launched her career with the single “Lost in France” in 1977. That same year, her song “It’s a Heartache” climbed high on the UK and US charts, cementing her success. Her signature track, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” hit number one in 1983 on both sides of the Atlantic, making her the first Welsh artist to achieve this feat in the United States. Over her career, she earned a Grammy nomination for the hit and further nominations for her album and other singles.
