The president of the Law Society has expressed his continued support for David Lavery to remain as chief executive despite Lavery providing a character reference for his cousin, William Lloyd-Lavery, who was convicted of serious sexual offenses. Mark Borland noted that Lavery offered a “sincere apology” to the society for his involvement in the matter.
In response to the controversy, Lavery acknowledged that offering the character reference was a “serious error in judgement.” The situation has prompted the Law Society to organize a special meeting to address the concerns raised about the reference and the subsequent handling of the issue.
Last week, David Lavery was dismissed from his position as a human rights commissioner. Borland, speaking on Good Morning Ulster, admitted that the society’s response was flawed, expressing “regret” and stating, “we got it wrong.” The call for transparency and accountability came from 50 members of the Law Society who submitted letters requesting a Special General Meeting to understand the decision-making process behind retaining Lavery as chief executive.
Borland acknowledged the society’s failure in communication, saying, “We failed to communicate what we were doing, why we were doing it and how we were doing it.” He emphasized the importance of establishing better procedures to prevent similar mistakes in the future. Nonetheless, Borland reiterated his support for Lavery, describing the situation as an internal employment matter and stating, “David [Lavery] has my support to continue as the chief executive of the Law Society of Northern Ireland and to move us forward.
