Liverpool’s Melodic Distraction to cease broadcasting after nearly 9 years on air

Melodic Distraction, a Liverpool-based radio station, has announced its closure after almost nine years of operation. The station, which also housed Melodic Bar, made the announcement on Instagram citing rising costs, fewer funding opportunities, the cost of living, and the impact on the management team’s mental health as reasons for the shutdown.

The community broadcaster had relocated to Fabric District two years ago. It also served as a coffee shop and outdoor bar in an effort to generate additional revenue streams. Despite funding issues, Melodic Distraction had its fair share of achievements, including stages at events such as Gottwood and We Out Here. The station was also involved in events, livestreams, and a magazine.

Melodic Distraction’s shutdown comes after Worldwide FM and SWU FM paused broadcasting in the previous year due to funding issues. SWU FM was later acquired and re-opened by Rinse FM earlier this month. Other community radio stations have also introduced supporters’ subscription schemes to overcome funding obstacles.

The station will mark its closure with a final broadcast today, where listeners can send in voicenotes reminiscing about their fondest memories of the station. Melodic Distraction was not just a radio station, but a cultural hub that served its community extensively
