A couple who targeted men seeking paid sexual services by drugging them with the intent to steal have been sentenced to prison following the deaths of two men and the poisoning of others. Adina Mihai and Madalin Dumitru admitted to the manslaughter of Gary Mouat, 37, from Oxfordshire, in 2025, and Malcolm King, 80, from Gloucestershire, in 2024. In addition to these charges, both also pled guilty to administering poison to two other surviving victims.
The pair, who were handed 17-year sentences at Oxford Crown Court, operated by arranging meetings with men through online advertisements for sexual services. Mihai posed as the sex worker, inviting clients to her home where they were given alcoholic beverages secretly spiked with gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a potent sedative. Following their victims’ loss of consciousness, the couple would steal valuables including cash, jewellery, and expensive watches. While two men died due to the poisoning, two others survived but cannot be named due to legal restrictions.
Prosecutor Julian Evans KC explained that Dumitru would drop Mihai off at the victim’s residence and wait nearby, reportedly carrying weapons for protection. Mihai encouraged the men to drink the tainted alcohol, waiting until they became unconscious before searching for items to steal. He described the defendants, who had previously lived in Birmingham before moving to Ilford, as acting out of greed. During sentencing, Mrs Justice Brunner KC remarked on the unpredictable and dangerous amounts of GBL administered, highlighting the defendants’ reckless disregard for the serious risk of injury or death posed by the drug.
Initially, the death of Malcolm King in August 2024 was not treated as suspicious. However, after Gary Mouat died nearly a year later, detectives re-examined the earlier case, leading to the arrest of Mihai and Dumitru. Thames Valley Police discovered Mihai’s fingerprints and DNA at both crime scenes, confirming that both men had been poisoned. At the sentencing, a video message from Gary Mouat’s nine-year-old son was played, expressing his grief and questioning why his father was killed rather than simply robbed. Malcolm King’s sister also spoke, sharing how devastated she was by her brother’s death and acknowledging a sense of relief that the killers were held accountable, though peace had not been found
