Millions across the UK and Europe witnessed a remarkable solar eclipse, the most striking in almost three decades. Viewers in the UK experienced a partial eclipse, which reached its peak just after 19:00 BST, with the Moon obscuring more than 90% of the Sun’s surface. Meanwhile, regions in Greenland, Iceland, and Spain were fortunate to observe a total eclipse, where the Sun was completely covered, plunging these areas into temporary darkness.

The total eclipse began its path far from populated areas, starting at the northernmost point of Siberia in Russia. It then curved over the Arctic Ocean, reaching Iceland by early evening, before moving southward to parts of the UK. The partial eclipse was first noticeable in northern Scotland around 18:00 BST and shortly after 18:20 BST on England’s south coast. Initially subtle, the phenomenon became more apparent to those lucky enough to have clear skies, with many witnessing the gradual encroachment of the Moon over the Sun.

Conditions varied across the UK, with central and southern England and Wales enjoying clear skies, offering spectacular views as the Moon slowly traversed the Sun for about an hour. In contrast, northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland experienced cloudier weather, though this did little to diminish the enthusiasm of crowds gathered at well-known landmarks. Many obtained solar eclipse glasses, despite suppliers running out due to high demand. In their absence, people creatively used colanders, cereal boxes, and paper to safely observe the eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, blocking some or all sunlight and casting a shadow on Earth. In the UK, the alignment wasn’t perfect, resulting in a partial eclipse with the Moon covering approximately 90% of the Sun, reaching up to 95% in Cornwall. In contrast, Spain was treated to a total eclipse at around 19:30 BST, when the Sun, Moon, and Earth were precisely aligned. Chilean scientist Yasmin Catricheo, who traveled to northwest Spain to witness the event, described the moment of totality as indescribable, saying, “At the totality, everyone was cheering and sharing the excitement of what we were seeing. No words could describe the feeling. The universe is amazing.”

Total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth approximately every 18 months, but for any one location, they are rare, happening roughly once every 400 years. The total eclipse in Spain offered an extraordinary sight, with the Sun’s corona—the outer atmosphere—visible as superheated jets of gas extending far into space, accompanied by small loops of pink gas known as prominences shaped by the Sun’s magnetic field. The total eclipse lasted less than two minutes but left a lasting impression on those present.

The cosmic coincidence enabling these eclipses lies in the proportional distances and sizes of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Although the Sun is about 150 million kilometers away—around 400 times further than the Moon—the Moon’s diameter is about 400 times smaller than the Sun’s, making the two appear roughly the same size in our sky. If the Moon were a bit smaller or farther from Earth, total eclipses would not occur.

The UK can look forward to a “golden age” of total solar eclipses occurring globally between 2026 and 2028, with three total eclipses visible in various places worldwide. However, none of these will be visible in the UK, which will see only a partial eclipse in 2027 with around 45% Sun coverage in some areas. It will not be until 2081 that the UK experiences an eclipse with nearly total coverage (up to 99%), and the country’s next total solar eclipse will be in 2090
