Skywatchers across Scotland were treated to fleeting views of a solar eclipse, despite much of the region being shrouded in clouds. The Sun was almost completely hidden by the Moon in what is considered the most striking solar eclipse observable from the UK since August 1999.
The event began shortly after 6 PM on Wednesday evening and persisted for roughly two hours, with the Sun setting around 9 PM. Although early on, thick cloud cover limited visibility throughout much of Scotland, the sky gradually cleared in some locations, allowing viewers occasional glimpses of the rare celestial occurrence.
While areas of Spain and Portugal experienced a total eclipse, Scotland saw the Moon obscuring up to 95% of the Sun’s surface. At the eclipse’s maximum point, only a crescent-shaped portion of the Sun remained visible. In places where clouds blocked the view, observers noted a noticeable dimming as the Moon passed in front of the Sun.
Although smaller solar eclipses are predicted in the coming years, the next complete eclipse visible in the UK will not happen until September 23, 2090
