New data reveals that England and Wales have already experienced as many wildfires in 2026 as they did throughout the entirety of the previous year. In response to the escalating threat posed by extreme weather conditions, the Prime Minister is preparing to hold an urgent meeting to address the situation.
According to statistics released by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), a total of 1,017 wildfires have been recorded so far this year, matching the record-breaking count from last year. This surge has generated serious concern among officials and emergency services.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the fire in the New Forest as a “great concern,” highlighting the severity of the problem in the southern regions of the country. He also indicated that a ban on disposable barbecues is under consideration following the wildfire incident, which has led to stronger warnings about their use in areas at high risk.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) urged the public to be extremely cautious, emphasizing that “It only takes one careless action to start a wildfire.” They warned that actions such as discarding a cigarette, lighting a campfire, or using a barbecue could quickly escalate into a large and damaging wildfire. The service also reminded people to take their litter with them, refrain from smoking or using barbecues, and avoid lighting campfires or bonfires in vulnerable areas.
