Weather conditions for the upcoming eclipse are expected to vary across the UK. While many areas will benefit from clear skies offering excellent visibility of the event, some regions—particularly northern England, north Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland—may experience cloud cover between 18:00 and 19:00. In western Scotland and parts of northern and western Northern Ireland, this cloudiness could lead to rainfall during the same period.
Meanwhile, viewers in Spain are predicted to enjoy ideal conditions with clear skies. Cities such as Bilbao, Valencia, and Palma, Mallorca will witness a total eclipse, while Barcelona and Madrid will experience nearly complete coverage of over 99%. The total eclipse will reach its maximum between approximately 20:26 and 20:33 local time, which corresponds to 19:26 to 19:33 BST.
Northern Spain has become a major destination for eclipse watchers, attracting large crowds eager to witness the phenomenon. Spain’s finance ministry estimates that around half a million visitors will come to the region for the event. Julie, who traveled with her family from Brest, France, to Burgos, expressed her excitement, saying, “We came from very far to see it in totality. I have seen [it] once and it was beautiful and amazing – I am so happy to have the chance to see one again.” Similarly, Leonor Aguilar from Jaén shared her perspective: “During that minute and a half, what I hope to see is the grandeur of nature and to experience it with my family. We often spend money on trivial things instead of investing in something as beautiful as witnessing such a marvellous sight.”
Martin Griffith, director of the Brecon Beacons Observatory in Wales, described the eclipse as “one of the great phenomena of nature.” He noted, “It is going to be a fantastic eclipse in Spain, we are right on the path of totality. What they will see is about a minute and 40 seconds of totality. It will be dark, the Moon will completely cover the Sun.” He added that although eclipses occur fairly regularly, being positioned on the path of totality—especially over land rather than the ocean—is rare and extraordinary. For those in the UK, the next opportunity to observe the Moon obscuring as much of the Sun will not come until 2081, with the next total solar eclipse visible from the British Isles expected in 2090.
A solar eclipse itself occurs when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align in such a way that the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, obstructing the sunlight reaching the planet. Total solar eclipses happen somewhere on Earth approximately every 18 months, but they are only visible along the narrow path the Moon’s shadow traces, known as the path of totality. When witnessing a total eclipse, observers experience an intriguing progression of events: the sky darkens noticeably, and as the Sun becomes completely hidden, its outer atmosphere—the corona—becomes visible as a glowing, pearly-white halo. This corona consists of superheated plasma extending millions of miles into space and is vastly fainter than the Sun’s bright surface, which is why it remains unseen under normal daylight. Just above the Sun’s visible surface lies the chromosphere, a thin pinkish layer a few thousand kilometers thick.
