A well-known YouTube duo have received approval to establish a donkey sanctuary on a five-acre plot adjoining their residence in West Sussex. Zoella, whose real name is Zoe Sugg, along with her fiancé Alfie Deyes, submitted a planning application earlier this year to develop the land they had recently purchased near Hassocks.
The local planning authority, Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC), highlighted potential archaeological concerns, noting that the site could contain significant historical artifacts dating back to Roman, Anglo-Saxon, or prehistoric times. Consequently, the council granted permission on the condition that archaeological investigations are conducted prior to the commencement of any construction work.
Zoella, recognized for her initial success with beauty videos and subsequent ventures into publishing and product lines, put forward detailed plans in May. Their proposal included creating an animal enclosure, building stables, installing three shepherd huts, providing parking for tractors, and adding a pond. However, previous digs in the area had already uncovered Roman-era items, leading the council’s archaeological adviser to insist on monitoring groundworks closely.
Residents in the vicinity expressed worries regarding the project’s impact on scenic views, potential traffic increases, and the accessibility of local bridleways and footpaths. Some neighbors also raised objections about the premature erection of gates and fencing on the site. One anonymous local remarked, “We also don’t like the gates and would rather they were not there,” explaining how the presence of gates changes the character of the open paths which are popular for walking. On the gate, Sugg and Deyes posted a message emphasizing their efforts to protect the land from housing development and encouraging community support for preserving local green spaces
