Nigel Farage has revealed that the incident involving an incendiary device being pushed through his letterbox at his London home in April 2025 is “directly linked” to the murder of Ann Widdecombe, following a reopening of the investigation by counter-terrorism police. Farage made these remarks during a press conference where he acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the police’s actions but refrained from providing further details at this stage. The event, initially causing damage to his door but no theft, prompted an initial investigation by both Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London and the Metropolitan Police, which was subsequently closed without any arrests.
The investigation into the letterbox incident has now taken a new direction after CTP London identified a previously unpursued line of inquiry. As a result, the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), has launched its own investigation into how the original inquiry was handled. The IOPC’s probe centers on allegations that a staff member from CTP London overlooked or failed to follow up on critical investigative leads related to the attempted burglary. Demonstrating accountability, CTP London referred itself to the watchdog and expressed its commitment to fully cooperate with the ongoing review.
Ann Widdecombe, the 78-year-old former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman, was discovered dead in her Devon home last month, suffering serious injuries. Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, has been charged with her murder. Kerry was initially arrested on 11 July on suspicion of murder and later additionally detained on 13 July concerning acts of terrorism. Widdecombe was a prominent political figure, having served as a Tory MP for Maidstone over 23 years and held ministerial positions during the 1990s under former Prime Minister Sir John Major.
CTP London has confirmed that victims and families affected by both the incidents received updates about the investigations. Although it remains unclear how the attempted arson incident at Farage’s residence connects with Widdecombe’s homicide, the reopening of the case marks a significant development in the ongoing law enforcement efforts.
