Elisabeth Ross, a 38-year-old aid worker from Edinburgh, was found deceased in a suitcase inside an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens on 18 July. Ross had been volunteering with a refugee support organisation in Athens, having arrived in Greece on 26 June and staying initially in the Keratsini area of Piraeus until 10 July. Greek authorities believe she died several days before her body was discovered. Her family remembered her as “kind, principled and selfless,” emphasizing that “her integrity was absolute, and she dedicated her life to helping others in need.”
Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old Afghan boxer, has been charged with Ross’s murder, along with accusations of robbery and illegal weapons possession. Greek police detained Ahmadzai first on weapons charges before adding a homicide with intent charge. He is also accused of stealing over €10,000 (£8,500) from Ross’s bank accounts using her cards. Following his arrest, Ahmadzai was remanded in custody until trial, which could take up to 18 months. He denies the homicide charge but admits to relocating the body out of fear of being blamed for her death.
The investigative process has faced delays. Although Greek police initially stated that tests to determine the cause of death were being expedited, results may now take at least another month, according to spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou. Early reports indicated that the coroner found no external signs of trauma on Ross’s body, prompting an undetermined cause of death. Later examinations suggested asphyxiation as the probable cause, although Ahmadzai’s lawyer insists Ross had no injuries when found and is requesting the inclusion of toxicological and histological analyses in the case file.
Additional information that has emerged includes statements from Ahmadzai’s wife, who alerted police after noticing her husband was missing from their apartment and tracing his phone to Ross’s location. This testimony has been described by authorities as vital to the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Greek officials collaborated with Interpol and U.S. authorities to identify Ross through fingerprint analysis. Police reports also noted that Ahmadzai allegedly sent messages from Ross’s phone to her friends and family after her death before switching the device off
