Birmingham Airport baggage issues leave hundreds without luggage

Passengers traveling through Birmingham Airport have encountered significant issues with missing luggage following problems with the airport’s baggage system. One traveler, Chapman, recounted seeing a “build up” of suitcases caused by malfunctions in the luggage belt system. Although airport staff assured her that the bags would be loaded onto the plane, upon arrival at Dalaman, the pilot informed everyone that no checked bags had actually made it onto the flight. Chapman expressed frustration, saying, “We have heard nothing about compensation, no communication when our luggage is expected, we’ve heard nothing about who is liable for it. Is it the airport? Is it TUI? Is it our travel insurance? Who are we meant to go to? We’ve had nothing from anybody.” She further described the lack of updates from the airport as “just radio silence,” aside from minimal acknowledgment that there was a problem.

The disruption forced Chapman and other passengers to spend their first day shopping for basic necessities since their luggage had not arrived, with uncertainty hanging over how long this situation would last. She highlighted the wider impact, noting that “there are families all over the world at the moment with nothing and no idea of what’s going on,” and called on Birmingham Airport to be held accountable for addressing the issue promptly.

Similar experiences were reported by Simon Leyland, who traveled from Birmingham to Rome on a Jet2 flight to join a family cruise. Leyland found himself without any luggage upon arrival and was under pressure to board their coach, as the cruise line warned that missing it meant missing the ship. Leyland, from Barton-under-Needwood, explained, “We were sat there yesterday with no bags, no record of any bags and the cruise line saying ‘our coach is going to set off, and if you don’t get on it you won’t get on the ship’.” He discovered through AirTags that his bags had taken a circuitous journey, with one left overnight at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and another having stopped in Manchester. He remains hopeful the luggage will be reunited with his family in Corfu but criticized the communication, calling it “awful” and emphasizing that “there should be a point where it’s like, ‘we understand, it’s an issue and we’ll just over-communicate and we’ll tell you where they are’.”

Clive Stokes, who flew to Cyprus from Birmingham, also shared his experience. While he acknowledged that some delays were “understandable” given the circumstances, he was critical of the airport’s failure to clearly inform passengers about the baggage situation. Stokes stated he received a late email during the flight indicating a high likelihood of missing luggage, but on arrival, only about 20 cases from the flight had come through. Having spent several hundred euros on essentials during his trip, he expressed a hope for reimbursement but noted that the inconvenience affected those with special circumstances, including passengers missing wedding dresses. In response, Birmingham Airport confirmed ongoing issues with its baggage handling systems, stating that engineers are actively working on repairs and staff are trying to process luggage as efficiently as possible. A spokesperson apologized for the inconvenience and urged passengers to follow airline guidelines regarding arrivals. Jet2 reportedly contacted affected travelers, and other parties are assisting with luggage reunification. TUI has been approached for comment. Meanwhile, some flights from Bristol Airport are now being rerouted through Birmingham Airport following runway issues at Bristol
