Assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis has decided to retire from her on-field officiating career to take on a new role within the Football Association. Over the course of her career, she has played an integral part in more than 150 Premier League matches and is now set to become a senior manager, focusing on the support and development of female officials.
Massey-Ellis’s rise in refereeing began in 2010 when she became only the second woman to serve as an assistant referee in the Premier League. Throughout her career, she has achieved several groundbreaking milestones, including becoming the first Englishwoman to officiate in a men’s European fixture and the first woman to participate in a men’s FA Cup final. In addition to her contributions in men’s football, she has been involved in five Women’s FA Cup finals.
Reflecting on her decision to step away from active officiating, Massey-Ellis shared, “Although I am stepping away from the touchline, I am not stepping away from football.” She emphasized her commitment to the sport beyond her on-field role.
