During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the individual already had nine penalty points on her driving licence. These points resulted from three speeding violations recorded in June 2023, followed by additional offences in June and July 2025. She explained to the court that if she could no longer drive her dog to his daily walks, she feared she would have to find a new home for him. She expressed the emotional impact of such a situation, stating, “I think the emotional turmoil of that would truly damn my career as a writer.”
She further elaborated on the solitary nature of her profession, emphasizing how hard she works and how losing the companionship of her dog would affect her deeply. “It’s very, very solitary and I work exceptionally hard and I would just stop,” she said.
La Plante, famed for creating the character Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison from the series Prime Suspect, admitted to several recent speeding offences. These included driving at 24mph on two occasions, as well as at 25mph, 26mph, and 27mph. Importantly, all these infractions occurred while she was en route to take her dog for his regular walks.
During her testimony, La Plante shared that her current dog, named Theo, came into her life after the heartbreaking loss of her previous pet, Hugo.
