The family, who had traveled from Barking in east London to the island near Colchester earlier that day, were caught off guard by the strength of the tide, which Ahmed described as “very strong.” Police noted the group made significant efforts to assist each other during the incident.
In a message posted on a fundraising page, Shahin Ahmed recounted the horrifying moments leading up to the tragedy. He explained how the family outing turned catastrophic just twenty minutes before they planned to leave, with screams erupting as members of his family were pulled into the sea. Despite his desperate attempts, Ahmed was repeatedly pushed back by the waves and reflected on the painful reality that sometimes even a parent’s love cannot conquer the power of natural forces. He emphasized that the danger was unknown to them, adding, “The tragedy didn’t begin because we ignored danger. It began because we never knew it was there.”
Remembering his son, Ahmed painted a picture of a joyful and kind-hearted boy who brought happiness to those around him. He spoke warmly about Musa’s bright nature, his curiosity, and his instinctive kindness toward others. The father now hopes to honor Musa’s memory by establishing a program aimed at teaching young people first aid and water safety, intending to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The response from rescuers and bystanders, including individuals who attempted multiple rescues and administered CPR, was praised for its professionalism and determination, and local councils have committed to installing new safety signage at the beach in response to the incident
