Excitement has been building outside cinemas as fans eagerly line up to watch the newly released Spider-Man film, widely praised as an exceptional comeback for the beloved superhero. Entitled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, this marks Tom Holland’s fourth time leading a Spider-Man solo movie, continuing his portrayal of Peter Parker.
The storyline picks up following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, portraying Parker as he protects New York City while grappling with a new reality where even those closest to him have no memory of his existence. This installment is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after previously directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Tom Holland stars once more alongside Zendaya, reprising her role as MJ, and the film also introduces Jon Bernthal’s Punisher to the MCU for the first time, as well as featuring Sadie Sink in a role kept tightly under wraps.
Critical reaction to the film has been mostly favorable. Reviewers have appreciated the shift from the complex multiverse themes of No Way Home to a more intimate, character-driven narrative. Robbie Collin of The Telegraph called it “the best Spider-Man film since the Tobey Maguire era,” highlighting the compelling dynamic between Holland and Zendaya, which brings fresh emotional complexity to their characters’ relationship. Similarly, William Bibbiani from The Wrap praised the film’s heartfelt storytelling and “wonderful, propulsive quality,” describing it as the strongest entry yet in Holland’s Spider-Man series. John Nugent at Empire awarded it four stars, declaring Spider-Man “still Marvel’s ace in the pack,” while The Standard gave it a five-star review, complimenting its “verve, intelligence and above all, heart.”
Not all critics were fully convinced, however. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian suggested Zendaya’s performance “saves this film” from “silliness and the generic déjà vu overfamiliarity.” David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter echoed this view, noting that the movie “chugs along satisfyingly even with the occasional patch of sluggishness and the usual overly convoluted plot contortions,” while emphasizing that the intimate moments between MJ, Ned, and Peter deliver the film’s strongest emotional impact. Danny Leigh from the Financial Times awarded three stars, praising the Holland-Zendaya chemistry but critiquing the reliance on CGI-heavy action scenes.
Beyond the film itself, attention has turned to the future careers of its stars. Holland and Zendaya first met while working on Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016, when they were just 20 and 19 years old respectively. Over a decade and multiple blockbusters later, speculation about their moves beyond the MCU has intensified. Holland recently hinted on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz that changes are coming: “It’s going to change, for sure,” he said, adding that there is “a whole plan” in place since No Way Home involving “the passing on of the baton.” Zendaya has previously suggested she may take a break from her career after 2026, following a busy period promoting projects like The Drama, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Dune: Part Three. In an interview with Elle, she stated, “I think that after this, I’m going to have to take a little bit of a break,” a sentiment she reiterated to Entertainment Tonight by saying she had “nothing” planned and would just “mind my business.”
