Sainsbury's agrees to sell Argos for £120m

Sainsbury’s has confirmed the sale of Argos for £120 million as part of a strategic move to concentrate on its primary food retail operations. Despite the change in ownership, Sainsbury’s has assured that there will be no disruption for customers, employees, or suppliers. Argos will continue its presence within Sainsbury’s locations, maintain sales of Habitat products, and uphold the Nectar loyalty program.

The purchaser, Swift Partners, is a newly established entity formed to acquire the Argos brand. Among its leadership is Richard Pennycook, who previously served as the head of the Co-operative Group. Argos currently operates 667 stores throughout the UK, with 201 functioning independently and 466 located inside Sainsbury’s outlets. Additionally, the brand boasts over 450 collection points nationwide.

Richard Pennycook expressed confidence in Argos’s prospects, stating he “strongly” believes in the brand’s future and sees “real opportunities to invest and build on its progress.” The transaction is anticipated to finalize by February of the following year. This sale comes after Sainsbury’s acquired Argos along with Homebase, Habitat, and other Home Retail Group brands in 2016 for £1.3 billion.

Retail analyst Clive Black has noted doubts regarding the compatibility of Argos with Sainsbury’s grocery focus, characterizing the supermarket’s effort to divest Argos as “challenging and prolonged.” He described Argos as a “suboptimal performer from a financial perspective.” Recent figures from Sainsbury’s indicate a group-wide sales increase of 3.1% in the first quarter of this year; however, Argos’s sales declined by 0.5%. Bally Auluk, the national officer for Usdaw, the union representing Argos staff, acknowledged the uncertainty caused by the announcement but welcomed Swift Partners’ commitment to retaining the current business model of standalone stores, in-store locations, and local fulfillment centers
