An international team of ten climbers, led by the well-known Nepalese former Royal Marine Nirmal Purja, is currently feared missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak, a mountain in Pakistan that stands at 8,047 meters and ranks among the world’s tallest. The incident reportedly occurred around midday on Thursday in the Karakoram mountain range, according to local mountaineering authorities.
The group includes climbers from several nationalities: one American, one Chinese, one Omani, and five Nepali members. Since the avalanche struck, there has been no contact or communication from the team, raising serious concerns about their safety.
Nirmal Purja, the head of the expedition, gained international recognition in 2019 when he completed ascents of all fourteen mountains over 8,000 meters in a little more than six months. His leadership of this recent expedition has brought significant attention to the ongoing rescue efforts.
Search and rescue teams are hoping to deploy helicopters to aid in locating the missing climbers, but their operations depend heavily on favorable weather conditions. Updates on the situation are expected as more information becomes available
