James Desborough, a convicted serial killer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This sentence follows revelations that authorities are investigating four unexplained deaths linked to the homeless shelter where Desborough resided. He was already serving a minimum 19-year term for the murder of his prison cellmate, Steven Kempster.
The latest conviction pertains to the killings of Claudio Aquilino, aged 57, and Daniel Coleman, aged 43, which took place in Cornwall. Both men had come into contact with Desborough at the Sandy Lodge homeless shelter in Newquay. The police have launched a review into the circumstances surrounding two additional male and two female deaths at this location to determine if there is any connection.
During sentencing, Mr Justice Pushpinder Saini emphasized the gravity of Desborough’s actions, describing him as “a highly dangerous individual who had no regard for the life of those you think are worthless.” The judge outlined how Desborough gained the trust of the vulnerable men before inflicting extreme violence upon them. After the murders, Desborough dismembered their bodies, attempted to conceal them, and even used their bank cards to create the illusion that they were still alive. Due to the severity of these crimes, a rare whole life tariff was imposed, meaning Desborough will never be eligible for parole. Furthermore, he received additional five-year sentences for preventing the lawful burial of both victims.
Devon and Cornwall Police continue to investigate the additional deaths at Sandy Lodge. Detective Superintendent Rachael Bentley explained that the police were alerted to the four deaths by the coroner’s office and have undertaken renewed forensic analysis, reviewed CCTV footage, and gathered statements as part of an ongoing probe. Bentley noted that Desborough is not currently a suspect in these cases and that initial inquiries suggested natural causes for the deaths. The investigations had been temporarily halted following Desborough’s arrest for murder but have since resumed.
