A 32-year-old man has admitted to charges of false imprisonment and aggravated vehicle taking after stealing an ambulance with both a patient and a paramedic on board. The incident occurred outside the Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent at approximately 8:15 pm on March 25th.
The suspect, Marshall Leese from Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, was pursued by police officers until he halted the ambulance at a petrol station located on the A34 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. Following this, a second ambulance was dispatched to retrieve the patient and safely return them to the hospital.
In addition to the primary charges, Leese also pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen and driving without insurance during his appearance at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. He was remanded in custody, and the sentencing hearing has been postponed, with the date yet to be announced.
Judge Sally Hancox characterized the event as “unusual.” The West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that alongside deploying a second ambulance, they conducted a welfare check on the paramedic involved to ensure their wellbeing after the incident
