Court documents reveal that Hammond was initially detected speeding by a police officer using a handheld speed camera just before 1:00 p.m. BST on December 2, with a second recorded offence around 11:45 a.m. BST on December 22. Following these incidents, West Mercia Police sent speeding tickets to a Grade II listed castle in Herefordshire, which Hammond had purchased in 2012, as well as to a farm estate near Hereford valued at £1 million. However, the letters were returned marked “addressee gone away.”
Authorities eventually located Hammond at his £2 million residence near Abergavenny in Wales, where evidence indicated that over 30 vehicles were registered at the property. Court papers also outline that Hammond faced another driving-related offence in August of the previous year.
Hammond, known for co-hosting the BBC series Top Gear alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May from 2002 until 2015, had previously been banned from driving in France for three months in 2013 after speeding during the filming of an episode with Clarkson. Regarding the current case, Hammond responded to the charges of disregarding police letters and failing to identify himself as the driver by stating in a letter read to the court by his solicitor, “He replied identifying himself as the driver. He sent the reply by First Class post. He posted the reply himself.”
Ultimately, the police decided to drop the additional charges against Hammond. He was prosecuted and found guilty of the speeding offences, which formed the basis of the conviction
