Prime Minister Andy Burnham has named Bridget Phillipson as the new chair of the Labour Party. In her expanded role, Phillipson, who also serves as the minister for women and equalities, will collaborate closely with Deputy Labour Leader Lucy Powell to modernize and prepare the party for the upcoming general election.
Last year, Phillipson and Powell competed directly for the deputy leader role following Angela Rayner’s resignation, with Powell ultimately securing the position after gaining 54% of the membership vote. Phillipson previously held the post of education secretary under Sir Keir Starmer, but when Burnham formed his cabinet last week, Powell was appointed to that position.
Burnham emphasized Phillipson’s role in enhancing the party’s digital campaigning capabilities. “She will play a vital role in ensuring the Labour Party is match fit for the next election,” he stated. Phillipson takes over from Anna Turley, who was recently appointed as a minister in the Home Office. The leadership team also includes chief whip Anneliese Midgley and is focused on fostering cultural change as well as developing the party’s infrastructure and policy framework in preparation for an election that could be held as late as 2029.
Phillipson expressed her enthusiasm for the appointment on the social media platform X, stating, “I joined our party as a teenager and saw first hand the difference a Labour government makes.” She added, “I’ll work with members to build the election-winning machine that sees off Reform [UK] for good and secures a second Labour term.” Lucy Powell welcomed the new chair, saying, “Working together, we will ensure the party continues to lead the way in campaigning, with the strongest ground operation in British politics as we prepare for the next general election.”
