A harrowing case has emerged involving a former funeral director who deceived families by pretending to have buried their loved ones, leaving many victims devastated. Joanne Moody, whose father Peter Moody was among those affected, describes her experience as having “crucified” her. Peter’s body was only discovered by authorities months after what was supposed to be his funeral, found alongside dozens of other unburied remains and ashes stored at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull in March 2024. Shockingly, some bodies had remained there for as long as a year.
Robert Bush, aged 48 and previously the director of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, faces sentencing at Hull Crown Court following his admission of 67 offenses. These charges include 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burials. Alongside these, Bush has also pleaded guilty to 35 counts of fraud by false representation related to funeral plan sales, one count of theft involving charitable donations, and fraudulently running his business. The stolen funds were intended for charities such as the Salvation Army, Macmillan Cancer Support, and other local causes.
Joanne Moody spoke candidly about the pain caused by Bush’s actions, saying, “It’s broke me, it’s crucified me. He has shown no remorse. No sympathy.” Despite Bush being granted conditional bail after his guilty pleas, Moody expressed relief that justice is underway, stating, “It’s a pivotal point in our recovery knowing that justice is being done,” and added that she would “sleep easier” once he is held accountable. She shared memories of her father as a devoted family man who loved fishing, Hull FC, and spending time with his grandchildren, hoping now to remember him fondly rather than focusing on Bush’s betrayal.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond. Peter Moody’s family organized a second funeral six months after the initial one, as the first service had been hurried by Bush, leaving the family feeling robbed of a proper grieving process. The scandal additionally affected charities, including the Hull Fishing Heritage Centre, after Bush stole donations collected at a funeral.
