The cost of home heating oil in Northern Ireland has experienced a sharp increase after a brief period of decline. Recent data from the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland (CCNI) reveals that over the past three weeks, the average price for 500 litres has surged by nearly £99, rising from £346.59 to £445.37—a 29% jump. Raymond Gormley of CCNI attributes this escalation to heightened tensions and conflict between the US and Iran, which have disrupted crucial oil supplies and transportation routes. Notably, around two-thirds of households in Northern Ireland rely on home heating oil, a significantly higher proportion compared to other UK regions.
Historically, prices reached a peak of £612.37 for 500 litres in April but had gradually fallen to £346.59 earlier this month. However, recent trends show an upward trajectory again. The latest figures indicate that the average cost for 300 litres now stands at £276.23, up from £216.44 on 2 July, while 900-litre orders have climbed to £789.07, an increase of £173.84 since the same date. This reversal has sparked concerns among residents who depend heavily on heating oil for their homes.
Some locals have spoken out about the impact of these escalating costs. Agnes Jackson, who previously switched from oil to gas because of cost savings, now finds the prices comparable between the two fuels. She emphasizes the difficulty of managing household budgets when oil purchases require large sums rather than smaller, more manageable amounts like £40 increments for gas. Similarly, Rosie and Patrick McGivern, having stocked up before the previous price peak, worry about the approaching winter, describing the continuous price increases as “terrible” and voicing concerns about the affordability of heating oil for typical families.
Others share these worries. Emma Rose Creaner, whose rent includes heating oil expenses, finds the price surge “completely ridiculous,” especially considering families who might struggle the most during colder months. Hugh O’Donnell, a retired individual dependent on heating oil, acknowledges the difficulties many face with these rising costs. While his pension cushions the financial blow, he understands why this trend is challenging for the majority.
