Despite the gloomy skies threatening rain, a vibrant group dressed in flowing red garments gathered on the Yorkshire moors, their enthusiasm undeterred by the weather. The participants united to perform a re-creation of the iconic music video for Kate Bush’s 1978 hit “Wuthering Heights,” a song that draws its themes from Emily Brontë’s classic novel. Each year, thousands of fans worldwide don red robes—and sometimes long black wigs—to take part in The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever, celebrating the song and the story it stems from.
Events like these have occurred in several cities globally, including Sydney, Copenhagen, Berlin, Folkestone, and Preston. However, this particular gathering is especially significant as it takes place on Penistone Hill, near the renowned Brontë Parsonage in Haworth, nestled in the Pennine hills. On clear days, those present can view Top Withens, the ruined farmhouse believed to have inspired the setting of the beloved novel.
Lydia McKinnon, the event’s organizer, expressed her excitement at bringing together such a lively and warm-hearted group. She emphasized that no dance experience was necessary, adding a light-hearted comment about weather preparedness: “I just hope that the Kates and Cathys have got their thermals and their rain ponchos because they might need them.” The event has proven immensely popular, with all 500 tickets selling out in just 90 seconds this year, mirroring the previous year’s sell-out. The funds raised benefit charitable organizations such as Women’s Aid, the Haworth and Oxenhope District Bridleways Group, and Friends of Brontë Country. Some attendees traveled from far afield for the occasion, including Frances Murphy and Katherine Egan, who made the journey from Australia. Having previously participated in Brisbane’s event, they were eager to experience the celebration in its authentic setting. Katherine reflected on the day’s success, saying, “It’s wonderful.
