The recent heatwave that affected much of England and Wales came to a close last weekend as cooler air moved in, causing maximum temperatures to fall broadly to between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius. Despite this overall decline in warmth, two specific locations — Usk and Exeter — have maintained temperatures just meeting heatwave conditions. These areas have now experienced 20 consecutive days meeting the heatwave threshold, marking the longest continuous spell so far in the year.
As the weekend progresses, temperatures are expected to decline further, accompanied by some rainfall in parts of the UK. This combination is likely to bring an end even to the localized heatwaves that have persisted in Usk and Exeter. Nevertheless, this respite might be short-lived.
Looking ahead to the following week, meteorologists anticipate a build-up of high pressure near the southern region of the UK. This atmospheric pattern is expected to cause rain-bearing weather fronts to stall, limiting wet weather primarily to northern and western regions, particularly north-west Scotland. Meanwhile, southern areas of the country are predicted to experience a resurgence in temperatures.
Such conditions raise the possibility of a fourth heatwave occurring soon. However, the Met Office has noted that isolated spikes in temperature at only one or two locations would not fulfill the criteria for an official heatwave.
