Sandy McCook, who serves as chairman of the Nethy Community Council, reported witnessing a significant escalation of the fire on Thursday evening, spreading from Mam Suim and Craig nan Gall into the Strath Nethy area. He noted that a shift in the wind, which increased and turned westerly, pushed the flames eastward.
Speaking to BBC Scotland News, McCook described the profound effect the fire has had on the local village. He said residents are extremely anxious, feeling uncertain about the situation as they observe conditions on the ground that do not always align with official updates from various agencies.
McCook also expressed frustration over the response efforts, stating that needed air support was lacking. He emphasized that a governmental declaration of a state of emergency or a critical incident could have allowed access to military resources, which might have significantly improved the firefighting operations. Reflecting on the events, he admitted feeling “sick to the pit of his stomach” over the unfolding crisis.
Covering an area of 1,748 square miles (4,527 square kilometers), the Cairngorms National Park spans across five local authority regions: Aberdeenshire, Angus, Highland, Moray, and Perth & Kinross. Several areas within the park have been closed or restricted, including trails near Glenmore, Loch Morlich, and Badaguish. Low-level routes such as the Old Logging Way, access paths to Cairngorm Mountain, the Northern Corries, Meall A’ Bhuachaille, Green Loch (Lochan Uaine), Strath Nethy, and Bynack More are also affected.
