Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has had his knighthood revoked by King Charles III. Donaldson, who served as a Member of Parliament from 1997 until 2024, was convicted in June on 18 counts of sexual abuse, including one rape charge. These offenses involved two women who were victims during their childhood.
Following his conviction, Donaldson requested that he be removed from the Privy Council, the body that advises the monarch, and also sought the forfeiture of his knighthood. Subsequently, official action took place regarding these requests.
On Thursday, an official notice appeared in The Gazette, one of the United Kingdom’s formal records, confirming that the King had ordered the cancellation of Donaldson’s knighthood. The statement from the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood declared: “THE KING has directed the cancellation and annulment of the knighthood conferred upon Jeffrey Mark Donaldson on the 11 June 2016 as a Knight Bachelor.”
Jeffrey Donaldson had originally received the knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list of 2016. Earlier in July, he was also removed from the Privy Council, in line with the consequences following his criminal conviction
