A man involved in plotting an attack on a military installation alongside the Manchester synagogue assailant has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 17 years. Mohammad Bashir, aged 31, accompanied his friend Jihad Al-Shamie on a lengthy 10-hour drive to carry out hostile reconnaissance at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, on August 14, 2025.
Several weeks after this visit, Al-Shamie, 35, was fatally shot by police following the violent assault at Heaton Park Synagogue, where two Jewish men lost their lives. Bashir, who comes from Cheetham Hill, pleaded guilty to a charge of preparing an act of terrorism and was subsequently sentenced at Manchester Crown Court.
During the sentencing, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb stated that by August of the previous year, Bashir had firmly embraced jihadist ideology. She emphasized that both men were equally involved in plotting an attack on a British military target, an act they anticipated would result in their deaths as well as the deaths of others. The judge dismissed Bashir’s claim to a probation officer that he had renounced extremist beliefs and expressed remorse for his conduct.
The judge further remarked, “I consider you remain dangerous.
