Many people may feel like rain has been absent for quite some time, and this perception isn’t far from reality for certain parts of the UK. Interestingly, June overall was actually wetter than usual across the country. However, this rainfall was heavily concentrated during the first half of the month in England and Wales, creating a misleading impression of dryness for the latter weeks.
Since June 15th, the majority of England has seen notably little precipitation, with most areas receiving less than 10mm of rain. Certain regions in central southern England have experienced particularly low amounts, with some locations measuring just 3mm or less. One striking example is Wisley in Surrey, where there has been no recorded rainfall for a full 36 days.
Wales largely saw less than 25mm (around 1 inch) of rain since mid-June, but parts of the north-east have been especially parched. Rhyl, located in Denbighshire, recorded a mere 3mm of rain during this period. In southern England, these dry conditions have triggered official responses, including a hosepipe ban implemented by Thames Water from Thursday. This restriction joins similar bans imposed by other water companies across the south, as certain areas in southern, central, and eastern England face drought-like conditions.
In contrast, Northern Ireland experienced a significantly wetter June, with rainfall 67% above average, and western Scotland also received abundant rain. Yet, July has brought much drier conditions to Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, except for the Highlands.
