The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into corporate manslaughter following the tragic death of Joshua Robbins, aged 23, who died after falling from the balcony of his apartment in central London. The incident took place on 26 January at the Holland and Thurston Dwellings in Holborn. At the time, Joshua was leaning against the balcony railings to check on a pizza delivery ordered for himself and his father, Will Robbins, when the railings collapsed.
During a pre-inquest review held at St Pancras Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that the Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA) is cooperating fully with police requests for evidence connected to the case. Joshua’s mother, Fiona Garrett, 46, has expressed her desire for clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding her son’s death, noting the severe trauma experienced by her husband upon witnessing the fall.
A forensic engineer has examined the scene, and CCTV footage was collected to assist with the investigation. Detective Inspector Mark Paterson stated, “It’s an ongoing investigation. A lot of the material is held by ISHA, who are fully compliant with requests that are being made at this stage.” He added that further updates would be expected by January, with the senior coroner, Mary Hassell, scheduling another pre-inquest review for 6 January 2027.
Fiona Garrett has been actively seeking answers by reaching out to her son’s Member of Parliament, former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, to request a meeting. She appreciated the prompt response she received from his office, which went beyond standard correspondence. Garrett shared, “I thought, ‘Oh well, if I get a reply it would just be your bog-standard, written-by-someone-else response and he just won’t even know that it’s gone out’, but the fact that he wrote it, so he actually signed it himself at the bottom and wrote a little bit extra, it did seem really genuine.” She also recalled how her husband reacted, saying, “When I showed Will, he was just like, ‘Oh my God, the prime minister knows who our son was’.” Meanwhile, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that investigations are continuing and that the family is being kept informed, with ongoing collaboration with the Crown Prosecution Service
