Ann Widdecombe tragically died after suffering multiple blows to the head with a hammer at her home in Devon while she was having lunch, prosecutors revealed in Westminster Magistrates’ Court. According to the prosecution, the accused, Joshua Kerry, arrived at her residence on 8 July in a red Vauxhall Corsa and entered through the front door.
The court heard that Kerry, who was reportedly wearing black gloves, stayed inside the property for only about two minutes. During this brief time, he allegedly struck Widdecombe repeatedly with a hammer, causing her to fall from her chair, before stealing her wallet and leaving in the vehicle. Kerry, aged 28 and from South Yorkshire, has been charged with murder and was remanded in custody to face further proceedings at the Old Bailey later the same day.
Ahead of the attack, a scheduled online interview with Channel 5’s Matt Allwright show was missed by Widdecombe just before 1 p.m. BST on 8 July. When the production team was unable to reach her, they contacted her personal assistant, who in turn asked the gardener to check on her well-being. The gardener entered through the unlocked front door on 9 July and discovered Widdecombe lying face down on the kitchen floor with a severe head injury.
Emergency responders were called to the scene but Widdecombe was pronounced dead at 12:20 on that day, an earlier inquest revealed. Prosecutors presented security camera footage from Widdecombe’s home in Haytor, which confirmed the fatal attack occurred on 8 July. Authorities continue to investigate whether the incident involved any terrorism links or political motives. During his brief appearance in court, Kerry, from Rotherham, showed little emotion and only confirmed basic personal details.
