A tragic incident occurred during a family holiday in Majorca when a three-year-old girl named Eleri Ellesmere drowned in a private swimming pool, an inquest has revealed. On the evening of June 24, Eleri was found unconscious in the pool at a rented villa near Pollensa. Despite immediate efforts by family members and paramedics to resuscitate her, she was transported by ambulance to the main hospital on the island, Hospital Universitari Son Espases, located approximately 44 miles away in Palma. Unfortunately, she passed away the next day.
The family, originally from New Tredegar in Caerphilly county, had been staying at Villa Francisca, a two-bedroom property less than five miles from Pollensa. This area is known for its popularity among British holidaymakers, particularly families drawn by the sandy beaches. The villa itself is advertised as an ideal place for family vacations, featuring a private pool that now sadly became the scene of this tragedy.
During the opening of the inquest at Gwent Coroner’s Court, it was confirmed that Eleri’s body had been repatriated to the UK and formally identified by an undertaker. Coroner Rose Farmer ruled the cause of death as mechanical asphyxiation due to drowning accompanied by respiratory failure. The court will conduct a full inquest on April 13, 2027, to further examine the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death.
In the wake of this loss, Eleri’s family expressed their profound grief, acknowledging the devastating impact of losing a child. To assist with the financial burdens related to her funeral and to support her parents, a family member named Shannen Hemmings established an online fundraiser aiming to raise £10,000. As of now, it has collected over £7,000. Hemmings shared that Eleri was “deeply loved” and described the loss as an “unimaginable emptiness” for everyone involved. The fundraiser’s purpose is to ensure a dignified farewell for Eleri while allowing her parents the necessary space to grieve without the added concern of financial stress
