The government has been informed that the prisons minister, Lord James Timpson, has resigned from his position. Appointed to the role in July 2024, Lord Timpson transitioned from his previous role as CEO of the Timpson Group, a company known for key cutting and shoe repair services, which notably employs many former prisoners.
When Lord Timpson joined the government, his appointment was met with enthusiasm by some within the Labour Party, who described his approach as both “radical” and “innovative.” In a statement released on Monday and obtained exclusively by the BBC, he expressed that it was an “honour” to have served as prisons minister. While he did not specify the reason for his departure, sources suggest that he believes he has accomplished what he set out to achieve in the role.
At the time of his appointment, prisons in England and Wales were facing a crisis due to near full capacity. During his tenure, Lord Timpson managed the controversial early release program that allowed tens of thousands of prisoners to be freed early in an effort to alleviate overcrowding. Although critics argue that many issues remain, including ongoing violence, drug problems, and overcrowding in prisons, as well as overworked probation officers, statistics show a decline in assaults against prison staff and instances of self-harm.
In his resignation statement, Lord Timpson reflected positively on his time in office, highlighting improvements in the prison and probation services. He noted that “75% of prisons and 90% of probation teams are now performing better than when I started,” and that rates of self-harm, violence, and assaults on staff have decreased. Additionally, fewer prisoners are leaving without housing, which he described as a measure of dignity. He also took pride in establishing the Women’s Justice Board, emphasizing his belief that “most women should not be in prison at all” and his commitment to diverting women away from custody to support them in overcoming complex challenges.
Questions remain as to why Lord Timpson is stepping down ahead of the Sentencing Act 2026 coming into force in September, a reform expected to increase early releases and community sentences.
