On Friday, Burnham was formally confirmed as the new leader of the Labour Party after a brief leadership contest in which he stood unopposed, having gained the support of 379 Members of Parliament. Following his appointment, some opposition parties have called for him to call a general election to secure a clear mandate for his premiership.
Despite these calls, Powell emphasized that Burnham intends to honour the commitments outlined in Labour’s manifesto for the 2024 general election. “Our manifesto did talk about the redistribution of power, it did talk about the rewiring of our country, it did talk about taking on some of those vested interests,” she stated. Powell further highlighted Burnham’s understanding of the significant and bold actions required to fulfill these manifesto promises, commenting, “He really understands the bigger, bolder measures that are needed to live up to the manifesto promises.”
Powell also described Burnham’s leadership as an opportunity for a “reset,” pointing to the decision to scrap the Digital ID scheme as an example of reprioritizing government initiatives. One of Burnham’s earliest announcements after becoming leader involved scrapping the Digital ID plan introduced by Sir Keir last year. Powell noted that although the scheme would have involved a “not insignificant amount of money,” it also risked distracting from the core priorities of the government.
