On 16 July, emergency services received a 999 call originating from York Street, where authorities discovered a white Mazda vehicle positioned on the footpath against a wall. Surveillance footage captured the driver departing the scene on foot, as reported by the police during the court proceedings.
The court also learned that the defendant had contacted his mother, expressing suicidal thoughts. A prepared statement from the defendant, Donaldson, was read aloud during the hearing, in which he acknowledged his involvement in the incident and admitted to experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.
In the statement, Donaldson conveyed his remorse, saying, “I have to express remorse to the families, it was never my intention to cause anyone harm. I accept I am responsible for what happened. I was experiencing a mental health crisis both at the time and afterwards.” Despite his expression of regret, police argued that granting bail was inappropriate due to the risks he posed to both himself and the community, compounded by concerns over his ability to manage his mental health if released.
The judge acknowledged the visible distress Donaldson was in and recognized his remorse, but agreed with the police’s assessment that bail was not suitable given the circumstances, including Donaldson’s decision to leave the scene. As a result, Donaldson was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court in four weeks
