The UK is experiencing an exceptional year for weather records, with monthly temperatures in both May and June surpassing previous records by over two degrees. This marks the third heatwave of 2026, mirroring a similar pattern at the same time last year in 2025. However, during July last year, some southern areas experienced four straight days with temperatures above 30°C.
In July 2026 so far, there have been 12 days where temperatures exceeded 30°C, along with 13 days meeting heatwave criteria across parts of England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have also encountered heatwave conditions this week, though the intensity and duration of the heat there have been comparatively less.
The summer of 2026 is being compared to the famously hot summer of 1976. While 1976 still holds the record for the longest heatwave, the current year has witnessed higher extreme temperatures and a greater number of “very hot days.” Not only has the heat been remarkable, but the dryness has also stood out. For instance, some locations in southern England, like Wisley in Surrey, have reported no rainfall for a period of 30 days.
Most of Wales and Northern Ireland are experiencing rainfall deficits, although parts of western Scotland have recorded wetter-than-average conditions. Despite these dry spells, no regions in the UK are currently classified as being in drought, contrasting with the widespread drought that occurred during the heatwave in 1976. This year has also set new records for intensity with six days exceeding 35°C, and for the first time, 35°C temperatures have been recorded in three consecutive months—May, June, and July
