A 19-year-old named Sasha-Jay Davies from Aberdare is set to receive compensation after her identity was exploited to create fraudulent profiles on various social media platforms and dating apps. These fake accounts, which appeared on Tinder, TikTok, Instagram, and others, led numerous men to believe they were in genuine relationships with her. The person responsible, Elha Mai Weston, impersonated Davies to initiate romantic conversations over an extended period.
Weston, who gathered a following of over 100,000 people through these deceptive profiles, admitted to running this scheme for four years. She has apologised and agreed to compensate Davies, who is a student, an estimated amount of £10,000. The High Court in London described this as a “sustained campaign of online impersonation” or catfishing, involving the creation of fake accounts under names like “Sophie” and “Sophie Kadare.” Weston even employed AI-generated images based on Davies’s likeness to enhance the deception and pursued real-life romantic relationships.
The emotional toll on Davies has been significant. In an earlier interview with BBC Wales, she revealed that her life has become dominated by fear; she rarely goes out because she worries about being confronted by men who think they are romantically involved with her. Davies recounted the distress of being approached and harassed by strangers in public places such as supermarkets. “I’ve had boys approach me in person, harassing me and accusing me of texting them, leading them on, or making plans to meet up, alongside conversations I never had,” she shared.
The problem first arose in 2022 when Davies was only 16 years old, starting on TikTok before spreading to other platforms including Tinder, Hinge, Snapchat, Facebook, and SoundCloud. Despite tightening the privacy on her real accounts, Weston continued posting both older pictures and AI-modified images of Davies. To date, about 20 men and several women have contacted Davies under the false belief that they knew her personally.
