Residents urged to immediately leave Bonnington Bond flats over 'high fire risk'

Following a safety warning issued on Monday, several residents have already vacated the building, while others are still weighing their options, according to BBC Scotland News. The residential complex, which houses over 100 flats, was constructed on the grounds of a former whisky bond.

Earlier this year, in March 2024, a fire broke out at the site, resulting in injuries to two firefighters. The blaze rendered multiple apartments uninhabitable, with smoke causing damage to several others. Subsequent investigations have shed light on significant fire safety concerns within the building.

A City of Edinburgh Council report revealed that a survey conducted in May 2022 had uncovered numerous issues. These included the presence of combustible cladding and insulation, flammable decking, and problems with internal fire-stopping measures. Additionally, the report highlighted that seven internal lifts did not comply with relevant safety regulations.

In response to the fire, the developer Persimmon implemented various safety protocols, such as “waking watches” and the appointment of fire supervisors to monitor the situation. However, there remains no definitive timetable for completing the necessary remediation work, as the full extent of repairs has yet to be finalized
