Police continue to question a suspect in connection with the murder of politician Ann Widdecombe, marking the third consecutive day of interrogation. The individual in custody is a 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire. He was initially arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder. However, on Monday, authorities re-arrested him under suspicion of committing, preparing, or instigating acts of terrorism.
Ann Widdecombe, aged 78, known for her former role as a Conservative minister and her current position as a Reform UK spokeswoman, was discovered dead at her Devon residence on Thursday. She had suffered severe injuries. Following the initial arrest on Saturday, police have a maximum of 96 hours to formally charge the suspect. Yet, because he is being held under the Terrorism Act, law enforcement can detain him for up to fourteen days without filing charges.
Although Devon and Cornwall Police first indicated there was no evidence suggesting the killing was politically motivated, Counter Terrorism Policing has now taken over the inquiry. Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) stated that it assumed control after new information emerged, prompting the shift in investigation leadership. Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, acknowledged the earlier work by Devon and Cornwall Police and emphasized efforts to determine the motive behind the attack. “Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police,” he said.
Further details reveal that CCTV footage captured the suspect entering a vehicle in Yorkshire at around 08:00 BST on Wednesday morning. This was several hours before Widdecombe is thought to have been assaulted in her home around 12:30 that same day, according to Devon and Cornwall Police
