Walthamstow: Residents evacuated after east London fire

Approximately 100 firefighters have been deployed to tackle a blaze impacting a house, gardens, sheds, and a railway embankment in the Walthamstow area of east London. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that two rest centres have been established nearby to support those affected by the incident.

The fire brigade received more than 100 emergency calls shortly before 18:30 BST concerning the fire near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street. In response, around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines were dispatched to manage the situation. By around 21:00, the LFB provided an update stating that while the cause of the fire remained unknown, crews were diligently working to bring the flames under control as quickly as possible.

Residents in the vicinity have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to the heavy smoke being produced by the fire. Additionally, motorists are urged to avoid the area, notably Wood Street, Shernhall Street, and nearby roads, because of existing road closures linked to the emergency response.

The incident has also led to a partial closure of the Weaver Overground line. Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy, in an Instagram post on Sunday evening, mentioned that the fire has affected hundreds of people. She expressed gratitude toward the local community for supplying food and water to the rest centres, remarking that “it would make you cry to see what our community’s done.
