Newport man believed to be carrying crossbow shot by police

Authorities in south Wales responded to a report involving a man believed to be armed with a crossbow. The incident took place late on Friday night in Newport, on St Edward Street, where Gwent Police were alerted to threatening behaviour involving a weapon.

Upon arrival at the scene around 11:55 PM, officers confronted a 21-year-old male from Newport. Police fired shots at the individual, who was subsequently transported to a hospital. His condition has since been described as stable.

Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain emphasized that the event was an isolated occurrence and assured the public that no further suspects were being sought. He noted, “While reports of offences involving firearms and weapons are rare in Gwent, we take all reports of this nature seriously and respond to them in a professional and proportionate manner based on the level of risk posed by the available information.”

In addition, Gwent Police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting
