Ezri Konsa, primarily a central defender who can also operate as a right-back, shared his experience with BBC Sport about stepping into the right wing-back role during England’s victory over Mexico after Quansah was sent off. The Aston Villa player described the challenges of adapting to a new position under difficult circumstances, including the intense heat and playing with one fewer teammate.

Konsa explained that the tactical demands were tough, saying, “With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy.” He highlighted the physical and mental adjustments required, noting how he had to stay compact defensively and then quickly cover wide areas to prevent crosses when the ball switched sides. The initial phase was mentally demanding, as he admitted, “I think the first 10 minutes mentally was tough because I was feeling it a little bit, but I had to find a switch and overcome it.”

During that challenging period, Konsa received strong support from his teammate John Stones, who encouraged him consistently. John even offered to swap positions to ease the pressure, but Konsa declined, determined to handle the role himself. He recalled, “He even asked to swap positions,” and his response was, “No, don’t worry, it’s fine.” Eventually, Konsa managed to adjust to the demands just in time to contribute effectively to the team’s success.

Expressing pride in the team’s overall performance, Konsa said, “Super proud of the boys and what we managed to achieve that night.” He emphasized his willingness to play wherever the manager requires, stating, “I’ll always play wherever the manager wants me to play. As long as I’m on that pitch and helping the team, I’m happy no matter where I’m playing.
