Families can take advantage of more budget-friendly outings this summer through a variety of free and low-cost experiences. The Government has lowered VAT on selected children’s and family activities, including theatre and cinema tickets, dining at restaurants, and admission to amusement parks. This reduced VAT rate will be in effect until 1 September 2026. Additionally, free bus travel is available for children under 15 throughout August.

Liverpool City Council has introduced a complimentary leisure membership aimed at young people under 18, providing greater access to activities that promote health and community engagement. Those aged 8-17 who reside in Liverpool are eligible to join the Kids Go Free scheme as part of the council’s Active Lifestyles Youth Offer. Children under 8 also benefit from free swimming. This membership grants free access to gym and swimming facilities in participating Lifestyles centres citywide and is intended to encourage healthier habits, boost wellbeing, and offer inclusive recreation spaces for young people. Registration is possible online or at any Lifestyles centre, where members receive their free membership cards.

Liverpool’s libraries are inviting children to embrace music as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, themed “Read to the Beat!” The challenge celebrates the joy and inspiration music brings through reading. With a diverse selection of 55 books that reflect musical influences from around the world, children can engage with a variety of genres including stories, poetry, graphic novels, and non-fiction tailored to all reading abilities. As part of the National Year of Reading, the libraries encourage families to incorporate reading into their summer plans by setting reading goals and earning rewards. Children interested in participating can sign up at any local library.

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme provides free activities and meals for children and young people from reception age up to 16 years old who qualify for benefits-related free school meals during school holidays. This year, the program begins on Monday 22 July 2026 and offers a wide array of activities such as trips, Lego building, rock climbing, cooking, racket sports, sewing, painting, cycling, gymnastics, football, and gardening.
