Thirty years after the tragic deaths of a mother and her daughter, new DNA samples are set to be collected from a man currently imprisoned for the double murder. On July 9, 1996, Dr. Lin Russell, aged 45, and her six-year-old daughter Megan were brutally beaten to death in Chillenden, Kent. Another daughter, Josie Russell, who was nine at the time, survived the assault but sustained serious head injuries.
After the attack, Josie moved with her father to Gwynedd, where she has since pursued a career as an artist. The man behind bars for the murders, Michael Stone, is serving three life sentences. However, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) has reopened the case in light of claims from serial killer Levi Bellfield, who is said to have confessed to the killings.
DNA samples are scheduled to be taken from Stone on Thursday as part of this renewed investigation. Stone’s lawyer, Paul Bacon, expressed optimism about the developments, stating he was “very hopeful” that the ongoing CCRC review and the DNA testing could identify the true perpetrator.
Bacon further remarked, “We hope then to be able to bring Michael before the Court of Appeal and for him to regain his freedom after all these years of incarceration,” highlighting the potential for a significant shift in the long-standing case
