Peatlands in Wales cover only around 4% of the land but store nearly 30% of its terrestrial carbon, highlighting their critical importance. Unfortunately, about 90% of these areas have been degraded over time, transforming them from carbon sinks into sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Healthy peatlands can slow water flow to mitigate flooding and serve as natural firebreaks amid rising wildfire risks, both consequences of a warming climate. This ecological function drives Jones’s lifelong commitment to peatland restoration efforts.
