An unexpected discovery in an Edinburgh family’s attic has led to the sale of an impressive antique silver collection, which fetched nearly £60,000 at auction. The assortment, comprising over 100 silver pieces spanning from the early 18th century to the early 20th century, was initially estimated to bring in up to £23,000 when auctioned at Elmwood’s in London. The family, who preferred to remain anonymous, uncovered the items packed away inside dusty chests that had gone untouched for almost a hundred years.
A representative for the family expressed their delight at the auction’s outcome, stating, “We’re thrilled with the outcome and completely overwhelmed by the response to the collection.” They described how the finding, which began during the clearing of their mother’s home—a property held by their family for generations—transformed into an extraordinary experience. “It’s wonderful to know these pieces, which lay hidden for so many decades, have found new homes with people who will appreciate their history and craftsmanship,” they added.
The silver objects, which ultimately sold for a total of £59,761, featured a variety of remarkable items including a Victorian travelling shaving brush crafted by the notable silversmith Frances Douglas, an Imperial Russian tankard by the Moscow maker Nikolai Pavlov dated between 1882 and 1898, and an Edwardian silver jewellery box made in Chester in 1908. Among the highlights was Lot 15, consisting of a set of vintage Danish cutlery that commanded £5,200. Other pieces discovered within the chests included tea services, candlesticks, salvers, and various presentation items, all carefully wrapped in old newspapers and linen.
Joe Kendrick, head of the sale at Elmwood’s, reflected on the event’s success, remarking, “We knew this was a special collection from the moment we first examined the pieces from the chests, but today’s result exceeded even our expectations.” He highlighted the strong interest from bidders, explaining that the collection’s rarity and provenance, combined with the story of its long concealment, greatly enhanced its appeal. “It has been a privilege to bring these pieces back into the public eye and to see them begin a new chapter with collectors around the world,” Kendrick concluded
