Rare copy of US Declaration of Independence found by volunteer in UK archives

A recently uncovered copy of the Declaration of Independence is set to be showcased in the archives’ exhibition dedicated to the journey toward American independence, which began last month after extensive restoration work. This exhibit aims to highlight significant artifacts connected to the birth of the United States.

Saul Nassé, the chief executive of The National Archives, described the find as “an extraordinary discovery.” He also emphasized the rarity of the document, noting, “It’s a vanishingly rare surviving copy of the Declaration of Independence, found not in America, but here in the UK.”

The historical document was captured by the Royal Navy on Christmas Eve in 1776. The HMS Raisonable intercepted and seized the American vessel Dalton after a lengthy seven-hour chase off the coast of Portugal. This event led to the preservation of a copy of the Declaration in British hands rather than in its country of origin.

Dr. Graham Moore from The National Archives explained that this copy is among the rarest versions of the Declaration known to exist. He remarked that these early prints were not intended to be archived since their primary purpose was rapid distribution. “After the original printing on 4 July, the news of the Declaration is travelling fast around North America and its being reprinted as it reaches each successive colony,” Moore told BBC News. The copy in possession is one of only eleven surviving prints produced initially in New Hampshire
