The father of three sisters who tragically died in the sea off Brighton has spoken about the “unbearable” grief he feels following their loss. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, passed away in a tragic incident on 13 May. During the funeral held in north-west London, their father, Joseph Jacobson, expressed his deep sorrow in the order of service, stating, “You were more than my daughters: you were my joy, my strength and the beautiful light that filled my life with love.” Their surviving sister, Lilian, also shared her heartbreak, writing simply, “We were four, and now I am one.”
An official inquest has been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths, with Sussex Police conducting an ongoing inquiry into how the sisters ended up in the water. At the funeral, Joseph Jacobson’s heartfelt words continued: “No words can truly describe the pain of losing three daughters in the prime of their lives. There are moments when it feels unbearable, but I hold tightly to the memories we shared, the love we knew and the bond that nothing can ever take away. Jane, I will never forget your strength. Tina, your kindness touched so many lives. Becky, your warmth and joyful spirit brought happiness wherever you went. Though I can no longer see you, I carry you in my heart every day.”
Speaking on behalf of the family, their cousin Natalie Walters-Daniel reflected on the sisters’ achievements and lasting legacy. She said, “Your lives will never be forgotten, and your memory will live on forever. Together they accomplished so much. They pursued their education, they built careers, they created lives that reflected the values their parents instilled in them.” Professionally, Jane worked as a senior accountant, Christina held a position as a junior accountant, and Rebecca was employed as an HR administrator.
The inquest held at Brighton & Hove Coroner’s Court on 29 May highlighted that the exact causes of death remain unclear. Senior coroner Penelope Schofield urged that the ongoing investigation should quell any social media speculation. Authorities confirmed that there is no suspicion of third-party involvement. The sequence of events revealed that Jane’s body was recovered by RNLI and confirmed deceased at the scene, while Christina’s was also retrieved from the sea by RNLI and pronounced dead at Brighton Marina. The youngest sister’s body was found washed ashore near Black Rock. Their father formally identified each body. The inquest is scheduled to continue in early October.
At the time of their deaths, the sisters, all originally from Luton, were living together in Greenford, London. Emergency services responded shortly after 05:45 BST on 13 May following reports of a person in the water near the Black Rock car park along Madeira Drive. Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police emphasized that the investigation would be meticulous: “We will leave no stone unturned.” Police detailed that multiple lines of inquiry are being pursued to better understand the circumstances that led Jane, Christina, and Rebecca to be at the beach that morning.
